I did Whole30 for the first time a little over a year ago. I had been wanting to try it, but knew there were so many unhealthy choices around me that I couldn't do it alone. Finally, a friend said, "Let's do this together."
We set out on our mission, going 30 days with no dairy (yeah, no cheese, sour cream, milk, nothing), no soy, no legumes (the only bean you can have is a green one), no sugar, no grains (wheat, rice, corn, etc.), and if you're of drinking age no alcohol either.
We were meal planning, reading the Whole30, looking up tips on Pinterest -- the whole shebang. I went to my sister's bachelorette party on Whole30. I spent my last spring break of college on Whole30. It is hard. The book will tell you that it's not, but it is. It's a different kind of challenge - a mental one.
Recently, my sister and I started the Whole30 again. Here are my thoughts from going through the first week of Whole30:
1) How you feel on day one.
2) Meal planning seems impossible because everything you like has something in it you can't eat.
3) Sugar is in EVERYTHING.
4) Truthful timeline.
5) Eggs, eggs, and more eggs.
6) So. Many. Dishes.
7) When my sister says one rude thing to me.
8) I don't want to taco bout it.
9) You can find a solution to (almost) anything.
10) When it's only been seven days but feels like 45.
Whole30 is challenging, but if you have someone reliable to do it with, the results can be rewarding. The point of Whole30 is not to lose weight, but rather to pinpoint what food group is making you cranky, tired, what gives you a headache or upsets your stomach, and so much more! While it's not the objective here, weight-loss is still a common result of it.
Even after just one week though, I already have so much more energy, I'm not tired all the time, and my body doesn't take as long to recover after a workout. The benefits only get better from here. I would encourage anyone to try it out and see if you can make it the Whole 30 days and how much your life, mind, and body will benefit from Whole30.
A few more just because they're fitting.
